WHATSAPP USERS EASILY BAMBOOZLED BY MESSAGE

To all those who use Whatsapp as their primary messaging service, the title should definitely sound familiar. For over a week now, all Whatsapp users have been receiving a message that indicates that the free messaging service would soon go from being absolutely free to being charged as much as $25. The message was phrased carefully, using formal vocabulary, making it sound like the message was really coming from the desk of Whatsapp CEO Jim Balsamic.

The message reads:

“WhatsApp is shutting down on 28th jan Message from Jim Balsamic (CEO of WhatsApp) we have had an over usage of user names on WhatsApp Messenger. We are requesting all users to forward this message to their entire contact list. If you do not forward this message, we will take it as your account is invalid and it will be deleted within the next 48 hours. Please DO NOT ignore this message or WhatsApp will no longer recognise your activation. If you wish to re-activate your account after it has been deleted, a charge of 25.00 will be added to your monthly bill. We are also aware of the issue involving the pictures updates not showing. We are working diligently at fixing this problem and it will be up and running as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation from the WhatsApp team”

To top it off, WhatsApp has been having some issues with their application lately, causing the message ‘Error: Status unavailable’ to appear in places of contacts’ statuses. This particular problem was used by the fraudulent party to their advantage, for soon enough, messages were now being sent with the following text added to it:

‘Check the status of every individual contact is showing:
Status: error
Hello everyone, it seems that all the warnings were real, the use of WhatsApp cost money from summer 2012’

The second text, however, was sent in an informal manner, implying that this was being sent by a user and not the developers of the WhatsApp application. The message, causing panic among users, managed to convince even those who had not taken the earlier message seriously.

WhatsApp authorities, however, revealed that the message really was a hoax and they had absolutely nothing to do with it. They further added that they would rather work on making WhatsApp a better experience for its users rather than troubling them. It was always a free application and would remain one.

So, on that note, everyone is advised to once read up before they forward such texts! When one person forwards a text without authentication, dozens get fooled in a matter of minutes. The internet is a hub of fraud and mockery, don’t fall prey to it!

THE FUNNY SIDE:

On a lighter note, another message has been going around mocking the people who fell for this hoax.

‘Attention All,
In an hour the WhatsApp aircraft will be flying over UK to censor all active WhatsApp users. You must stand on your terrace in a pink underwear and wave a purple polka dotted flag at the plane while doing the macarena. After doing this, your WhatsApp service will be restored. If you do not broadcast this message an alien will come down and slap you with  a fish. It works. This is for all u who think sending a message would turn your icon blue or red and you’ll be a permanent user.’

Cheers, everyone! Beware of the WWW tricksters!
